1973/L VW T2 Bay Window Westfalia Continental Camper Van. This is a genuine righthand drive, German built and UK supplied example.
This camper van requires a full restoration but it is our view that it could potentially be an interesting and rewarding project.
History: Owned by a local family who purchased the van in 1990 (with 3 previous owners). It was used for holidays and day outings until 2001 when the van was taken off the road and never used again. It has been in dry storage with us for a number of years, the owner has now decided that they are not in a position to restore the vehicle and is being offered for sale.
The van has a recorded mileage of 36994. All previous MOTs dating back to 1994 would indicate that this maybe correct. The most recent paperwork relates to a MOT failure on 08/01/2001 with 36988 miles and it appears to have been off road ever since. Reason for MOT failure at this time were excess handbrake travel, rear tyres perished, horn not working and front door handle not working. I understand the van was initially stored outside under a cover for a number of years and probably accounts for its present condition. For the last 4 years it has been with us, stored in a purpose built indoor car storage facility.
Bodywork: Originally finished in off white and appears to have been previously resprayed at some stage in the correct colour. Will require a full strip, welding, restoration and respray.
Engine: This camper van would have been originally supplied with a 1600cc flat four single carburettor AD engine producing 50hp. At some stage this engine has been replaced with the much better and more desirable 1700 twin Solex carburettor type 4 engine producing 66hp. The engine number is CA100469. I have been informed that the vehicle was running and driving when it was laid up. The engine has not been started for many years. A quick inspection shows the oil level to be correct and the engine turns over by hand. Connecting a jump pack to the battery and all ignition lights illuminate. Unsurprisingly it does not turn over by key.
Chassis and underneath: I have tried to examine and photograph. The floor and chassis are surprisingly good in some areas and in others will require welding and restoration
Interior: Appears to be original and in good condition and certainly restorable back to its former glory. Front seats are not original. The drivers door, passenger door and rear tailgate glass are missing.
